Dr John Leyden's Panjabi Translations
Anglo-Panjabi literature and publishing initiative
The website shows the link between the British and the Panjab in the 19th Century.
At the turn of the 1800's the British would make inroads into the various areas of India. One of these areas was that of the Panjab. A fertile area which had a history going back 1000's of years. As part of the migration of British writers, translators and army personnel was one Dr John Leyden from Scotland. As part of his translation work undertaken in India, he would work on several Panjabi texts.
This website presents these translations for the first time to show the common ground of the British and the people of Punjab. Dr Leydens translations reveals his work was the begnning of Punjab and Sikh histiography.

This project was conceived by the Panjab Cultural Association to ensure the works of the Dr Leyden's Panjabi translations were brought out to the open.
This website focusses on the Panjabi works of Dr Leyden, the orientalist and poet who left what could be the first english translations of Panjabi texts. This site shows these translations and their significance to the wider Panjabi community.
The website covers the life of Dr Leyden and his translations. Manuscripts of the original texts are also shown so the link can be made with the english translations.
The viewpoint of scholars is given together with a general listing of Dr Leydens other works. The project aims to contribute towards Anglo-Panjabi heritage.
